Tutorials : Pinta - Drawing and image editing free software
Welcome to Pinta! Originally created as a Linux-friendly clone of the popular Windows tool Paint.NET, Pinta strikes the perfect balance for image editing: it is significantly more powerful than basic tools like MS Paint, but much lighter and easier to learn than massive suites like GIMP or Photoshop.
Getting started with Pinta is a smooth process, broken down into essential steps from installation to your first project.
1. Installation
Pinta runs beautifully across Linux, Windows, and macOS.
Linux (Ubuntu/Debian): You can install it straight from your terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pinta
* **Linux (Flatpak):** For the most up-to-date version regardless of your distribution, grab it from Flathub:
```bash
flatpak install flathub com.github.pinta_project.Pinta
Windows & Mac: You can download the installer directly from the official website (pinta-project.com).
2. Navigating the Workspace
When you open Pinta, you will find a clean, traditional 4-zone layout that takes seconds to understand:
The Toolbox (Left Sidebar): Your primary tools live here—selection rectangles, the paint bucket, paintbrush, eraser, text inserter, and the magic wand.
The Canvas (Center): Where your artwork or photo is displayed.
The Colors & History (Bottom Right): Choose your primary/secondary colors here. Below it, the History Palette records every single action you take. Pinta features unlimited undo (
Ctrl + Z), so never be afraid to make a mistake.The Layers Window (Top Right): The secret weapon to good image editing.
3. Understanding the Core Concept: Layers
The single most important concept to master in Pinta is Layers. Instead of drawing everything onto one flat canvas, imagine your image as a stack of transparent sheets of glass.
Active Layer Rule: You can only edit one layer at a time. Whichever layer is highlighted in your Layers box is the only one that will change when you paint, erase, or add text.
Workflow Example: Creating a Simple Graphic Layout
To see how Pinta flows naturally, try this sequence to build a basic photo layout with a text overlay:
4. Everyday Tools You Will Use Most
The Crop Tool (
Image > Crop to Selection): Instead of hunting for a crop button, choose the Rectangle Select tool, drag a box over what you want to keep, and hitCtrl + Shift + X. Everything outside the box disappears.The Magic Wand: Click this tool and click a solid color in your image (like a white background). It will automatically select the entire color block. Hit
Deleteon your keyboard to make that background transparent.Adjustments Menu: Found in the top menu bar, this is your photo correction hub. Levels fixes lighting, Hue / Saturation adjusts color vibrancy, and Black and White converts your photos cleanly.
When you are finished with your project, saving as a .png or .jpg will flatten your layers into a standard shareable picture file. If you want to keep your layers intact to edit them later, make sure to save it as an OpenRaster (.ora) project file.
